- A medium-sized underwater mollusk with eight arms. It is the most clever of its kind.
Octopuses (the correct in-game term) are notable for their ecru skin color. They can produce chitin when butchered, but only occasionally.
Combat
Octopuses can squirt ink when threatened (or when controlled in the arena by using x-a). This has the effect of hiding the octopus from view (due to its interaction token), as well as preventing it from being viewed or listed in the units menu. Octopus ink turns water a dark grey, similar to other contaminants.
When controlling an octopus, venturing too close to another creature will reveal your location, displaying the You're been spotted! message.
When controlling another creature, the You've spotted an octopus! message will appear. This is usually not good, as this means the octopus is only a step or two away.
In fortress mode (or in the main arena view), the appearance of an octopus will trigger the An octopus has sprung from ambush! message. This is also not good for your dwarves – unless they are well-trained, they can easily be drowned.
Cheating
DFHack can reveal hidden creatures with the slayrace
command.
Octopuses were sponsored by the generous contributions of the Bay 12 community.
