- A huge monster in the form of an eagle.
Giant eagles can be trained into war/hunting giant eagles at a kennel. They are one of the more preferred animals to train, as they can fly and they are really hard to kill by melee enemies. They are however not too hard targets for archers, including hunters.
They come with elven caravans, if the elven civilization is situated in a mountain area. If you get a chance to buy them tamed, make sure to do so. Try and get a breeding pair if you can and breed them like they're the last eagles on the world; you won't regret it!
They can be extremely annoying to an early fortress due to them killing your migrants mercilessly and flying over your walls, yet usually only if you provoked them.
Giant Eagles are exotic creatures. Their eggs take approximately six months of gametime to hatch; if eggs haven't hatched and it's been over six months, then something's gone wrong -- either they weren't fertilized, the mother was forced out of the nest box, your fort has hit a cap on total animals, or something else -- and you'll need to remove those eggs and force new ones to be laid if you want hatchlings. Once hatched, hatchlings take approximately an additional year to reach adulthood.
There is a current bug where tamed animals that have the [FLYING] tag, don't. So once tamed, your giant eagles will remain earthbound and never take to the sky, which makes them somewhat less deadly than they would be otherwise.
