This article is about an older version of DF.

- A huge immobile sponge.
Giant sponges, despite their harmless appearance, may be the new Carp of DF2012. They happen in savage rivers, lakes and oceans. While generally harmless, any time some fisherdwarf approaches next to the river, they may charge the hapless bearded one and engage combat. They may also became enraged or unconscious, as unlikely as it sounds.
Giant sponges are entirely invulnerable to battle and simply cannot be killed in combat. Any kind of blunt or edge attack will only tear the body at best, and do no damage. They are that way since they have just one bodypart, no blood, no brain and no way to cut the body into two. Even a bronze colossus with an adamantine slashing weapon, or a punch, will not kill it.
Not only they are completely invulnerable to damage, and having no attacks, they only "push" as a default attack, but their large size means they can cripple or even kill a dwarf via headshot. How can a giant sponge break a skull is a mystery for the ages.
However, they tend to be killed easily by air-drowning, since they are strictly aquatic. They don't seem to be affected much by the effects of fire and magma, but will drown in magma nevertheless. They do not seem to mind dragonfire as well.
Beware you who embark on evil water. A zombie giant sponge (or even worse, husk giant sponge) is NOT strictly aquatic.
Giant sponges are wonderful training dummies however, as long as they will not airdrown or if you bypass the problem via undead status.

According to it's RAW's, the giant sponge can not only be tamed, but ridden as a war beast by invaders. Make of that what you will.
