Carp is a fairly common variety of large fish that is infamous among dwarves as being a vicious killer. However, they are not as dangerous now as the stories would lead you to believe. They are still capable of dragging dwarves into water<small>1</small>, which if there are no ramps to allow the unlucky dwarf to escape can result in them drowning. Groups of carp are considerably more dangerous, able to inflict enough wounds with their raspy sucker-mouths to cause a fully-clothed dwarf bleed out and turn the river a festive red color.

If carp only exist in one specific water source (say, one Murky Pool), it may be best to simply designate a non-carp-infested body of water as a water source (i, set area rectangle using enter, w) and then restrict drinking and fishing to that zone () so dwarves aren't allowed to drink/fish anywhere else.

In prior versions of the game, carp had teeth that could inflict 3 times as much damage as an unarmed dwarf's fist, and so could dispatch an unarmed and unarmored dwarf (e.g. a fisherman, or a miner going for a drink) with ease. They were also strangely aggressive for fish, something which was kept for many releases because it was funny.

*The trait of carp to attack dwarves was purely accidental. Tarn Adams made carp carnivorous and about the size of a dwarf, and when he discovered that they would attack dwarves he decided to just leave it.

Wikipedia article

This article is about the current version of DF.
Note that some content may still need to be updated.

A medium-sized fish found in lakes and streams. They are bottom-feeders and tend to gather in groups.

Carp are a species of fish found in tropical freshwater rivers and lakes, where they appear in groups of 5-10 individuals. Infamous in previous versions of the game for their aggression and disproportionately powerful bite attacks, carp in the current version are an inconvenience at worst. Newborn carp are known as carp fry.

Carp are nearly as heavy as dwarves but are entirely benign, and due to being aquatic, they will never attack civilians out of their own volition. While old carp were vicious, today they are overcome with terror at the sight of fisherdwarves and serve only as target practice for your hunters. Undead carp, however, are a different story altogether. They possess an unused pet value of 50, but like most fish, are completely untrainable.

Some dwarves like carp for their protruding mouths.

Admired for their protruding mouths.
