This article is about an older version of DF.
A large canine found in temperate regions. It is territorial and hunts in packs.

Wolves abound in most temperate biomes. They don't pose much of a threat individually but they have numbers to help out. They will attack your dwarves and other creatures if they get too close or sometimes on their own. In fortress mode they usually retreat.

In adventure mode, this is one of the most common enemies you will find ambushing you when traveling around the world map, along with other large predators such as dingoes. You will often get caught in the middle of the pack, and even armed and armored with steel you might have a tough fight. However, being equipped with metal armor should make the fight much easier, since their teeth can't penetrate steel very easily. Try retreating a few steps and taking on one wolf at a time. Maiming all of them (by breaking bones in their limbs, or piercing vital organs) may be preferable to focusing on one at a time, since this will slow their onslaught.
