You can cut wood, smooth wood, featherwood, fungiwood, netherbark, ironbark and steeloak into planks. From each log you will get 4 planks, which effectively act as blocks. You can use this for big aboveground wooden forts, wooden floors, or whatever you like.

To craft steel bars from steeloak logs, you need to first research the Herbalist's Laboratory at the Researcher's Study. Steel bars are crafted at the Herbalist's Laboratory.

You can also cut gnarled roots, which are dug up in the soil layer, to one unit of wood each.

Grown harvested saplings can be cut into logs. This process leaves behind tree seeds to continue the tree farm.
