You can cut wood, smooth wood, featherwood, fungiwood, netherbark, ironbark and steeloak into planks. From each log you will get 4 planks, which effectively act as blocks. You can use this for big aboveground wooden forts, wooden floors, or whatever you like.

To craft steel bars from steeloak logs, you need to first research the Herbalist's Laboratory at the Researcher's Study. Steel bars are crafted at the Herbalist's Laboratory.
