Wikipedia article

This article is about the current version of DF.
Note that some content may still need to be updated.

A small spiny mammal with a long snout. It eats ants and termites and reproduces by laying eggs.

An echidna is a small, relatively harmless animal that curls up into a ball when threatened. Baby echidnas are called puggles.

Use

Tamed echidnas with access to a nest box will only lay a single egg at a time, which makes them a poor choice for egg production and breeding. Their small size also makes them less useful in a meat industry than other animals (producing slightly more food on average than a cat). Even for trading, they're less than ideal, for their low pet value of 50 makes them about as useful as a deer in that regard.

In real life

Echidnas are a relative to the platypus, and are found only in Australia and New Guinea.
