- A very large lizard.
Megalania are large reptilian creatures that are the Cenozoic ancestors of modern monitor lizards. They can be found in savage temperate grasslands and shrublands as well as tropical dry broadleaf forests. They are solitary hunters and can easily wipe out unarmed citizens they come across. While extinct in real life, their appearance is dependent on the settings chosen when creating a world. A young megalania is called a hatchling.
Megalania can be captured in cage traps and trained into exotic pets. They can be further trained into war beasts; their bulk, quick maturity rate, rapid growth, and huge clutch size make them a definite upgrade from other military options such as grizzly bears. Oddly, their eggs are slightly smaller than those of some much smaller egg-layers, making them a better choice for a meat industry rather than egg production. Megalania become adults after 1 year and reach their full size after 2.
Megalania may appear as exotic mounts during sieges.

While they have great combat capabilities and are associated with fossilized bones deep underground, they have no relation to any ketchup-eating skeletons. If you harm their environment, though, you're still gonna have a bad time.
